Comfort in the redwoods

A big week last week with celebrations for our newly minted 13-year-old – he had no idea about his present which we have purchased for his school in Melbourne as the kids bring their own device (BYOD). It certainly was a huge surprise to him – when asked what he got for his birthday he mentions it last in his list of gifts as it is something just for a special day! I love that about my kids they really are not that focused on consumer items and appreciate what they receive, thank goodness after living in this area where consumerism is everywhere and everyone has to have the latest tech gadget. Our house has one TV but everyone has a computer, mmmm maybe we have been sucked in too, so much for my anti-consumerist rant!! One of his fave things now are YuGiOh cards and has spent most of his birthday money on them – at least it is something that is creative and has a math component to it, so win win!

After all the fun celebrations of the week, we took it easy and went camping with our school for one night under the redwoods. This was my first time visiting Portola Redwoods State Park and it was just beautiful. We were in two group sites called the Circle and the Point and it was surrounded by massive trees and right by the creek.

My daughter took me on a walk through the obstacle course to get to the creek and we found one of the heroes of the redwood forest the banana slug doing his morning duty.

Looking up high so many tall trees and the energy in amongst the green in the morning was so relaxing. I felt a bit stiff in my body as my mattress had sunk to the ground and it was freezing so in the middle of the night I got up and blew up my mattress and found myself in the same situation come the morning, blah!

We had a couple of friends take us on the 1-mile return hike to the Old Tree, it was a very special hike leading to a very old redwood that 23 kids circled around on the docent-led hike the day before.

Massive fallen trees provided many spaces to jump up and walk upon – these are 10-year-olds hopping upon this giant log.

The sun was peeking through the trees in the morning and we really enjoyed the energy of these tall trees.

Finally, we made it to the tree and my son is trying to climb it, I gave it a huge hug and said farewell to the redwoods. This is something I will really miss when we go back to Australia but there are other old trees that I can enjoy in the forests around Australia.

This sign has the info on the age of the old tree at over 1,200 years old protected and living in a State Park. As ambassadors of the environment, our job is to take care of our earth so we can all enjoy the air that we breathe thanks to the trees.

This week before my CSA delivery came the fridge was empty and as my daughter is out on science camp it was a prime time to get into some beets! I made an amazing coconut milk (from coconut milk powder) beet latte for lunch and for dinner I found the Beet Balls recipe in my Samurai Salads book – I think I will have to look at it for more inspiration for autumn dinners. The beet balls were made with lentils and are the perfect addition for a wrap or crumbled into a salad.

A piece a Week – Something Small a Spool Necklace and a Mothers Day sale!

The last week was crazy busy with a camp trip to Butano State Park on Friday with our Grade 3 class families, teacher and school principal. We had a lot of fun and I have not laughed so much in a very long time. I was laughing so much at our singing around the campfire trying to come up with songs for a campfire guitar?? Anyone have any suggestions?? We did the Beatles, The Eagles, Men at Work (for the token Australians), some European folk songs and ended it all with Oh Sole Mio!
A Banana Slug strikes a pose

We also did this amazing hike in Butano Creek looking for newts, fish and banana slugs! It was very tricky looking at where to step next and which log to climb on and which rock to hop over – it was quite a workout! In the afternoon we went to the beach to see some waves and get some beach air at Bean Hollow. Pebble Beach at Bean Hollow State Beach felt so wonderful under your feet, it was just like a reflexology massage on many pressure points invigorating the soul or maybe it was just the icy cold surf?! The pebbles felt so good in your hands and the beach reminded me of Agate Beach at Patricks Point State Park way up north near the Oregon border.

The spool necklace is something I found and pinned on Pinterest a couple of weeks ago when I felt that I wanted a quickie project. So here it is inspired by the colors I was wearing that day – I may add a couple of more spools one day. The spools were given to me by a friend who likes to collect stuff for crafts that she may do “one day?” Lucky for me these now have a new life sitting on a necklace I found somewhere in my beading box.

Goes well with the orange top!

Camping over the summer…. continued

It has been a long time between posts as the summer holidays came to an end. The last month and a half of the holidays I had hardly a day on my own to sit down and write… I am now back somewhat on track with the kiddos back at school and working on goodies for a trunk show happening in a couple of weeks and the FabMo Textile Art Boutique which will be happening at Menlo Park. I wanted to add some of my last couple of adventures to the Summer Camp trip piccies – the last 3 trips were Limekiln State Park at Big Sur, Butano State Park in Pescadero and Henry Cowell State Park near Santa Cruz. All beautiful in their own way!

One of the amazing sunsets a walk from our campground at Limekiln SP
Another sunset completely accessible from our campground – it was so good to go to the beach after dinner
Banana slugs were a plenty on our redwood hike at Butano State Park – we enjoyed their campfire programs with our wonderful nature interpreter, Rosanna – check out their site here they have some very cool activities and hikes for the kiddos and of course the parents! Our campsite was secluded and away from the crowds and we loved the campfires every evening under the redwoods with a cup of vino.

Our last summer camp trip we went to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park near Santa Cruz this was a couple of nights under the redwoods. These guys had some seriously entertaining camp fire programs including a trivia night and sing a long. We enjoyed a lovely long hike from our campground to the Redwood Grove by the creek seeing Thomas the train and horses along the way. This is a camping area super close to the Bay Area and you have to get in early to get a site – I booked the site in January!
