NaBloPoMo – Day 6 – A day all over the shop…

Today just started off just fine with the usual drop off and exercise class. This is usually my day of working a nice shift of 6 hours of solid work but due to the madness that is out of my control with the car bizzo that got in the way as well as an appointment at my eye doctor. I spent a good couple of hours there working out that I need a new prescription on my left eye, which means new lenses! Yay it is usually a lot of fun but when my eyes are dilated it is very hard to see anything so the guy who worked at my optometrist offered to take photos of me in these fancy glasses. It was a bit of fun to try them on and it seems that I really like the style that I am currently wearing so I am gravitating towards the same. He found these funky red frames though I don’t know if I could live with them every day. The other colour I was attracted to was ultra violet – who knows what will be the final choice??

Red frames – maybe something different for the future??

The rest of the day was spent trying to get some work done I managed to make a couple of scarves though not finishing them. My main focus was making a farewell gift for our school librarian which I completed – whew! She leaves us on Friday and we will really miss her at our school. Other time sucks at the  moment is that I am trying to see if I can upgrade my house to be more energy efficient – mmm you really need to factor in time do any house stuff but I am sure it will be worth it in the end, this house is so cold in the winter! At least when I was at the optometrist I was inspired to paint my stairs like this… Oh that font looks interesting!

May one day I will paint my stairs – oh I have to find some time first!

A field trip with SF Etsy… to the Zoo!

For a fantastic day out – the SF Etsy team leaders organised to meet up with some of the team at the San Francisco Zoo. We were invited back to the ARC (Animal Resource Centre) at the zoo to get close and personal with some of the animals I have some pictures here. For the trip we all had to do an art project on an animal that inspired us. I saw some wonderful animals at the zoo that day but the animal that I was truly fascinated by was the Great Horned Owl. I had only seen a Great Horned Owl as a puppet or in a diorama at State Parks and the Natural History Museum, so to see him in real life took my breath away.

So, I created my art piece inspired the Archimedes the Great Horned Owl. I wanted include fabric that was woven as a connection to the story in my art piece. I loved the owl’s feather pattern and with fabric patterns are woven or even designed. So I scanned a piece of woven silk and used that as a backdrop. I enjoy working with fabric therefore using this in my digital art was important – I wanted to make the owl look powerful against the background so I painted his feathers with colours that are in contrast. Usually owls have the perfect camouflage but as I wanted him to look strong I emphasised his coat of feathers with bright highlights. The idea of this piece is that nature and animals are woven within the threads of our being – so enjoy… Archimedes the Great Horned Owl.

A Spring Craft Party

Spring baskets for my daughter 4th birthday

These are the little felt baskets I have made as goody bags for my daughters birthday this weekend – they are made from a wool felt with some gorgeous colours found from etsy.com. I found the pattern here and got sewing away with my new favourite toy my sewing machine. I love the crafty ideas on the maya made blog so a big thank you! There will be some treats and crafts made my the kiddos to take home in the basket with them – I am trying to rid myself of all the plastic and what better place to start than at my own party!
