The Grand Finalé

The time has finally come with 3 days to the show I have been working towards. My inventory of stock has finally come together! This weekend is the FabMo Textile Art Boutique from 10am to 4pm at the Elks Lodge in Palo Alto. I finally completed my final piece for the day of the show which is a dress made from the cascades of colored fabric I have collected over time which I made into the skirt for the dress. As well the bodice is fabric that I found at FabMo – I love how it turned out and the skirt is a lot of fun to wear as I puffed up the hem with gathers to enhance the differences in the fabric.

My last few garments have been completed somewhat slowly in the last couple of weeks with little bits of time here and there and I finally made all the pieces that I have cut out ready to be sewn. The shift dress in the 1960s green and orange fabric has terrific hanger appeal and is very fun to wear – fancy a bloody mary anyone? The checked yoga PJs are super comfortable to wear and the feel of the fabric is wonderful, I am sure they will find a good home with someone. I know I used my fox yoga PJs all throughout my Australia holiday in the winter mornings doing my yoga sessions.

I found this velvet collection of cascades on my last visit to FabMo and it makes an amazing looking huge tote with denim straps – it is a mix of the luxurious and the utilitarian that will hold a heck load of stuff!

As much as I would like to make more denim totes this is the last one as time is fleeting away and I think I have a lot in my collection and I need to have room on my table too! This beautiful butterfly fabric worked so well with this final bag for the show.

I am looking forward to presenting my ‘Traveling Not So Light’ range inspired by my 8 weeks of travels and coming home to my sewing room.

A field trip with SF Etsy… to the Zoo!

For a fantastic day out – the SF Etsy team leaders organised to meet up with some of the team at the San Francisco Zoo. We were invited back to the ARC (Animal Resource Centre) at the zoo to get close and personal with some of the animals I have some pictures here. For the trip we all had to do an art project on an animal that inspired us. I saw some wonderful animals at the zoo that day but the animal that I was truly fascinated by was the Great Horned Owl. I had only seen a Great Horned Owl as a puppet or in a diorama at State Parks and the Natural History Museum, so to see him in real life took my breath away.

So, I created my art piece inspired the Archimedes the Great Horned Owl. I wanted include fabric that was woven as a connection to the story in my art piece. I loved the owl’s feather pattern and with fabric patterns are woven or even designed. So I scanned a piece of woven silk and used that as a backdrop. I enjoy working with fabric therefore using this in my digital art was important – I wanted to make the owl look powerful against the background so I painted his feathers with colours that are in contrast. Usually owls have the perfect camouflage but as I wanted him to look strong I emphasised his coat of feathers with bright highlights. The idea of this piece is that nature and animals are woven within the threads of our being – so enjoy… Archimedes the Great Horned Owl.

A Fabulous show!

An update on the show which was last Saturday the 27th… It was super successful and I sold about one third of my stock. The rest I have put up on etsy for now till I can find time for another show. I would have to say that the FabMo Textile Art Boutique has an amazing array of talented folk showing their wares at a location that was just beautiful and airy. I would have to say I was happy with my spot outside under the eaves and the weather was perfect. A big thank you to all the people who came by to say hello and show their support, I truly appreciate you coming by. Here is a picture of my booth on the day – what fun it was and I met some great people there too!
